Type D Visa – Bulgarian Immigration Visa

How to get multiple entry D visa for 180 days for Bulgaria in 2020?

We make it easy to get a Bulgarian Type D Visa for immigration purposes.

If you’re a citizen of somewhere outside the European Union, even if you have Visa-free entry, you can’t stay in Bulgaria for more than 90 days in a 180-day period. If your plans include living or studying in Bulgaria for longer than this, you need to apply for a Type D immigration visa.

This special immigrant Visa is valid for a period of six months and gives you the right to stay in the country throughout this time without any restrictions.

What does a Bulgarian Type D Visa do?

A Type D Visa gives you the right to enter and stay in Bulgaria for six months. You can extend your Type D Visa by obtaining a permit for temporary residence or permanent residence in Bulgaria before the visa expires.

The final stage of the application for a Type D Visa has to be carried out by you personally in the embassy and consular offices of Bulgaria in your main country of residence.

You can find detailed information and links to the official websites of Bulgaria here: https://www.mfa.bg/en/services-travel/consular-services/travel-bulgaria/visa-bulgaria.

Important! Do bear in mind that this Visa only permits entry to Bulgaria. Entry to Schengen zone countries is not permitted.

Reasons for applying for a Type D Visa in Bulgaria

To apply for a Type D Visa for Bulgaria you must provide evidence that you have both an intention and a right to obtain a residence permit.

The most common reasons for obtaining a Type D visa are:

  • Kinship with a Bulgarian citizen or with a foreigner who has received permission for temporary, long-term or permanent residence (relocation for family reunion)
  • Being of Bulgarian ethnicity
  • Retirement (relocation in the status of a pensioner)
  • Opening a sales office in Bulgaria
  • Being the owner of a company registered in Bulgaria
  • Being an employee of the Bulgarian trade representative office of an LLC registered in any country in the world
  • Investors who contributed at least €250 000 to the charter capital of a Bulgarian LLC
  • Correspondents and journalists accredited to work in Bulgaria
  • Official marriage with a citizen of the European Union, Bulgaria or with a person entitled to temporary, long-term or permanent residence
  • Getting education in educational institutions
  • People who want to carry out activities in Bulgaria on the basis of free practice

Important! The purchase of real estate in Bulgaria is not a basis for obtaining a Visa. However, you do need to show that you have accommodation available in Bulgaria as part of the application process, so this can be a big plus.

Documents required for Type D Visa

To obtain a Type D Visa, you must provide the following documents to the Bulgarian embassy in your country of residence:

  • The completed Visa application form
  • Your foreign passport (valid for at least 18 months from the expected date of entry)
  • 2 photos for the Visa
  • A certificate showing you have no criminal record in your country
  • Confirmation of the availability of accommodation in Bulgaria
  • Confirmation of the availability of funds necessary for living (bank account statement)
  • Medical insurance

Those documents are mandatory for all applicants for a Type D Visa. Depending on your reason for applying for a visa, additional supporting documents must be submitted.

Important! All documents in your native language must be translated into Bulgarian. The signature of the translator must also be legalized either at the Consular Service under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or at the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria (a list of accredited translators is published on the embassy website).

How long does it take?

The decision period for issuing a Visa is 30 working days.

How much are the fees?

The consular fee for the consideration of documents is €100 for each applicant. This needs to be paid at the time of filing. In case of refusal to issue a Visa, the fee is not refundable. That’s why it’s so important to make sure all of your documents are proper and correct before you apply.

Can I be refused a Type D Visa?

In our experience, failures are very rare. The main reason why an applicant may be refused a Visa is earlier violations of the law in Bulgaria or other countries of the Schengen Agreement or violations of the Visa regime.

A Visa will also be denied upon the provision of deliberately false information. Therefore, filling out the questionnaire and preparing the documents needs to be taken very carefully.
