The Bulgaria Immigration Process

Below is a short summary of the most popular immigration options for Bulgaria:

Step 1 – Type D visa

You get one of these in the Bulgarian embassy in your country. It is valid for 180 days, during which you must enter Bulgaria and get a Residence Permit.
A Type D Visa allows multiple entries.

Step 2 – Temporary Residence Permit

Valid for 1 year, a Temporary Residence Permit is obtained while you are in Bulgaria and have an active Type D Visa D. It takes 14 days to process the permit documents.
After getting a Temporary Residence Permit, you receive a foreigner ID card with a LNCH – social security number of a foreigner.
To obtain long-term and permanent residence, you need to stay for five years for more than 180 days out of every year with no exceptions.

Step 3 – Long-Term Residence

With this status you can stay in Bulgaria indefinitely. You must be present in the country for five consecutive years with absences totalling no more then 10 months.
You get EGN – a Bulgarian social security number – and have all the rights that citizens have, except for the ability to vote.
You also get a Bulgarian ID which is valid for five years. After the end of this period, you simply renew your ID to continue your status.
If you haven’t entered Bulgaria or the EU in a 12 month period, you will be lose the status.

Step 4 – Permanent Residence

Your absences from Bulgaria must not total more than 30 months in the last 5 years.

You gen EGN – a Bulgarian social security number – you have all the rights of a citizen and you get a Bulgarian ID valid until the end of your foreign passport.

After this period ends, you get sent a new ID. There is no need to extend the status.

Step 5 – Citizenship

After 5 years in Bulgaria with long-term or permanent residence, you can apply for Bulgarian citizenship by naturalization.

With this, you can live and work in any country in the European Union.

How long does it take to move to Bulgaria?

You will need around 6-8 weeks to get a Type D Visa. Of this, about 40 days are required for the embassy to consider your documents. After this period, you can move to Bulgaria and get a residence permit and permanent residence without leaving the country.

Important! Bulgaria is a member of the European Union, but is not included in the Schengen zone. After you have achieved a residence permit for Bulgaria, sooner or later you will receive the full right to legally travel throughout the EU. In the meantime, on the basis of your permission to stay in the Republic of Bulgaria, it’s very simple for you to get a Schengen Visa without queues or nitpicking or additional fees.
