The Documents you will need

Bulgarian law lays out a clearly regulated list of documents that must be prepared and submitted before you obtain your extended residence permit. These documents must be:

  • Translated into Bulgarian
  • Translated by licensed translators whose signatures must be certified by the Consular Service at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria.

A sample list of documents which must be provided to obtain a residence permit in Bulgaria is as follows:

  • A completed application
  • A copy of your foreign passport with a note on the last entry into Bulgaria
  • Lease agreement or documents proving ownership of residential real estate
  • A bank certificate or account statement as confirmation of the sufficiency of funds for living in Bulgaria (€2,000 for each applicant)
  • A certificate of no criminal record
  • Medical insurance with a coverage of at least €30 000
  • Receipt evidencing the payment of state duty

Depending on your reason for obtaining a residence permit in Bulgaria, you will also have to provide a number of additional documents to the migration service.

For example, for pensioners who have sufficient financial security, it will also be necessary to provide a certificate of the received pension for the last three months and a copy of the pension certificate (for example, from a Social Security account from the USA).

Important! To get your Type D Visa (a necessary first step before getting your residence permit) only copies of documents are required. To obtain a residence permit, notarized copies of all documents are required.
